Southridge shoots down Bombers in opening round of B.C. High School AA Rugby Championships

first_imgIt’s obvious that a rusty, healthy team has a better chance of winning than a battle tested, injured squad.Which is just what happened during round one of the B.C. High School AA Boy’s Rugby Championships.Southridge of Surrey scored early and often en route to a 28-7 victory over Kootenay Rep, L.V. Rogers Rugby Bombers Saturday at City Field in Kelowna.Southridge now advances to the second round of the 16-team tournament to face two-ranked Brentwood College of Mill Bay.The injury-riddled Bombers face 15-ranked Esquimalt. The Island school was rocked 81-0 by Brentwood. LVR entered the tournament without a handful of starters, all suffering injuries down the stretch of the season.Bomber head coach Michael Joyce had hoped the Surrey private school squad may be a little rusty heading into the first round of the provincial tournament.However, that wish was quickly shattered as Southridge beat up and already battered Bomber squad.The Bombers returned home after the game in Kelowna.The team travels to Abbotsford for round two of the tourney Wednesday.Round three goes Thursday before the final placings are set in place Saturday.The Bombers, ranked seventh — the highest in school history — finished 13th spot in 2011.last_img
