No. 5 Argos Open Up Conference Slate with AUM and Montevallo
IN THE RANKINGS* The University of West Florida women’s soccer team has moved up to No. 5 after two strong wins against Lynn and Palm Beach Atlantic over the opening weekend of the season. Previously ranked No. 8, this is UWF’s highest ranking since the Argonauts were ranked No. 2 in the country in September of 2014. A QUICK RECAP* UWF’s home opener could not have gone much better than the 6-0 win over Albany State that fans saw on Wednesday.* Savanna Soares scored the first two goals of the match, marking her second career two-goal game at UWF.* Hannah Wooten and Victoria Swift each scored the first goals of their careers in the game, while Elizabeth Vickers scored her first of the season and Deneisha Blackwood scored again, giving her four goals for the season.* Shantell Thompson assisted on two goals and Leonie Kreil assisted on Swift’s goal, giving each of them three helpers for the year. That is gives Thompson and Kreil each a Gulf South Conference lead in the category, and no other GSC women’s soccer player has more than one assist so far this year. West Florida will be celebrating Argie’s Kids Club Day and Club Team Night on Friday. Live stats and video will be available for both games. Each can be accessed by visiting GoArgos.com/Live or by clicking the Stats/Video link above. SOME SCOUTING* The Gulf South Conference season opens for UWF with a pair of games against conference newcomers, in Auburn Montgomery and Montevallo.* AUM is first up and, despite being picked to finish 12th in the GSC, returns 65 percent of its shots and 75 percent of its goals scored, from a team that went 8-7-1 in 2016. The Warhawks may have been better than their record indicated, as the team was just 3-5 in one-goal games.* UWF and AUM faced off last year and the Argos took a 2-0 win, while taking 15 shots and allowing just 2. That is the only time that UWF and AUM have matched up in women’s soccer.* Montevallo, which returns to the GSC after spending eight years in the Peach Belt Conference, was picked to finish 10th in the league this year.* The Falcons return starters Taylor Gonzalez, who led the team with 8 goals and 18 points in 2016, Tylor Ring and Madison Madewell from last year’s squad that reached the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.* West Florida holds a 12-3-1 all-time record against Montevallo, with the most recent of those coming in 2013 — it was a 2-0 win for the Argos. NOTESSTATS/VIDEO PENSACOLA, Fla. – The fifth-ranked University of West Florida women’s soccer team will start the Gulf South Conference portion of its schedule with a weekend series against Auburn Montgomery and Montevallo, on Friday and Sunday. AUM is first up and will visit Pensacola on Friday for a 7:30 pm start, and Montevallo will make the trip to the UWF Soccer Complex on Sunday, with kickoff at 12:30 pm. LOOK AT KATELYN BURKHART* Senior keeper Katelyn Burkhart has allowed just one goal in 253 minutes of action in the net this year, lowering her career goals against average to 0.49 — good for second-best in UWF history.* The Pace, Florida, native also ranks in the top 6 in UWF history in goalkeeper wins (27; 6th) and shutouts (11; 5th). #ARGOS#Print Friendly Version A LOT OF GOALS* Having outscored opponents 12-1 over the first three games of the year, UWF’s +11 goal differential is one of the program’s best through three matches. It is the biggest goal differential through the first three games of a season since West Florida outscored Florida Tech, Warner Pacific and Spring Hill 19-0 in 2009.
