RFF plans Roissy – Picardie link

FRANCE: Following an initial public debate earlier this year, the RFF board voted on November 25 to launch formal studies and public consultation for the development of a rail link running northwest from Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle airport to serve the Picardie region. The infrastructure manager hopes to be able to apply for a Declaration of Public Utility for its preferred option in 2014.At present there are no local services into Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle airport from the north. The national hub is only served by long-distance trains using LGV Interconnexion and by RER Line B from the centre of Paris; there are also plans for an express rail link from Paris Est. RFF believes that a Roissy – Picardie link would fit with the country’s environmental objectives, opening up new opportunities for rail travel, avoiding the need for passengers to travel via Paris or use their cars to reach the airport. RFF President Hubert du Mesnil says that Roissy could become a multimodal hub for sustainable transport.RFF envisages the construction of a new link from LGV Interconnexion to the existing Paris – Creil – Amiens line. This would allow the operation of seven TGVs a day between Amiens, Creil and Roissy-CDG2, together with an hourly TER train serving Chantilly, Fosses and possibly other local stations in Picardie and Val-d’Oise. Out of three proposed options, the northern alignment has already been discounted for environmental reasons, but the central and southern are to be investigated in more detail.Total cost of the project is put at between €255m and €340m depending on the option chosen. Funding has been included in the 2007-13 regional budget settlements between the national government and both Picardie and Ile-de-France.RFF is also supporting the Ile-de-France transport authority STIF, which is developing its own proposal for the so-called ‘Barreau de Gonesse’, which would create an east-to-north link between RER lines B and D. read more

“Easy Rider” star Peter Fonda, brother of Jane and son of Henry, dead at 79

first_imgFonda was just 22 when he co-wrote the Oscar-nominated screenplay for Easy Rider, the 1969 film that would define his career. Fonda starred in the movie along with Dennis Hopper — who also co-wrote and directed the film — and Jack Nicholson, who received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.   The statement concluded, “And, while we mourn the loss of this sweet and gracious man, we also wish for all to celebrate his indomitable spirit and love of life. In honor of Peter, please raise a glass to freedom.” Variety reports that his sister Jane said in a statement, “I am very sad. He was my sweet-hearted baby brother. The talker of the family. I have had beautiful alone time with him these last days. He went out laughing.” In a statement, Peter’s family said that he died Friday morning at his home in Los Angeles of respiratory failure due to lung cancer.   “In one of the saddest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our hearts.  As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy,” the family noted. Fonda is survived by his daughter, actress Bridget Fonda; his son, Justin; and his third wife, whom he married in 2011.Copyright © 2019, ABC Radio. All rights reserved. Silver Screen Collection/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — Writer, director and actor Peter Fonda, son of legendary actor Henry Fonda and brother of Oscar-winning actress Jane Fonda, has died, ABC News has confirmed.  He was 79. Easy Rider and its rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack came to embody the counterculture, and marked a changing of the guard in Hollywood.  In 1998, the movie was added to the National Film Registry, having been deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” Finally, in 1997, he received an Oscar nomination, for his role as a beekeeper in the movie Ulee’s Gold — ironically, he lost to his Easy Rider co-star Nicholson. While Fonda continued to work steadily through the next five decades in both TV and film, Variety notes, “The astonishing career that some predicted for [him] in the wake of Easy Rider never came to pass.” It appears that Fonda’s final role will be in an upcoming war drama called The Last Full Measure, which is due to hit theaters in October. Fonda’s filmography included a wide variety of films, from The Cannonball Run and Escape from L.A., to Thomas and the Magic Railroad and Wild Hogs, to 3:10 to Yuma and Ghost Rider.  On TV, he appeared in episodes of CSI: NY, The Blacklist, ER, Californication and the reboot of Hawaii Five-O.last_img read more

Mini dredgers proposed for city’s clogged drainage channels – Dutch report

first_imgAs a result of a reduction in the cross-sectional flow of water in the areas of many of the drainage channels inA clogged drain in one of the wards of GeorgetownGeorgetown, the Dutch Risk Reduction (DRR) team of experts have recommended the procurement of minidredges to fix the problem. The DRR team in a report stated that although the sources of the deposited sediments have not been examined, it is likely that much of the sediments enter the drainage system from “the roads, illegal deposits, discharges and construction activities.”Deposited sediments must be removed regularly in order to maintain the passage capacity of the system and the common way to remove it is by an excavator that operates from the landside. But this has proven to be a problem because most places have buildings and human activities occurring. Thus it was proposed that a good way to maintain the city’s drainage channel at locations where excavation from the landside is not possible would be by floating minidredges, such as cutter suction dredges. The report stated that in The Netherlands, as well as in many other countries, these minidredges are often used to dredge channels in highly urbanised areas or in situations where mud needs to be removed. The report also indicated that in some instances, a floating pipeline is used to pump the dredged sediments or water mixture to a location where it can be further processed.“If such minidredges become available these may also be used to maintain the outfall channels. This would require the minidredges to be easily transportable, especially across the streets,” the report added. But, nevertheless the DRR team highlighted that before a minidredge is purchased, it first needs to be determined if such an investment will be profitable. This assessment starts with the computation of the potential benefits of dredging channels that currently cannot be maintained. The report added that the benefits of dredging are the expected reduction in flood damages, for which different flood scenarios, each with its own percentage of occurrence, need to be considered. The expectation is that dredging results in a lowering of the flood risk.It was also asserted that this benefit should be compared with the costs for purchasing, maintaining and operating the minidredges.Based on this data, a business case can be developed and a sound decision can be made on required dredging capacity, the report said.According to the report, decisions should be made on whether a public or private entity will run the city’s dredging operations. Afterward, it stated, a request for proposal to purchase dedicated equipment should also be made. The Government of Guyana has requested the Government of The Netherlands to provide advice on its drainage situation, both for Georgetown and the low-lying agricultural coastlands. The official request from the Guyanese Ministry of Public Infrastructure was sent to The Netherlands Embassy in Suriname in 2015.last_img read more
